Child support in Winston-Salem: how it is calculated

Child support in Winston-Salem is set by North Carolina's statewide guidelines — Forsyth County courts apply the same table as every other county. Here is the calculation, with the statute it comes from.

Where a Winston-Salem case goes

A Winston-Salem case is filed in the North Carolina court for Forsyth County, which applies the state guideline below. Local practice affects timing and paperwork, not the guideline amount. Winston-Salem has about 255,769 residents (Census Bureau, 2024 estimate).

Does Winston-Salem have its own rule?

No. N.C. Child Support Guidelines, Schedule of Basic Support Obligations (AOC-A-162, Rev. 1/23, eff. Jan. 1, 2023); G.S. 50-13.4(c) applies across North Carolina, so a case from Winston-Salem is decided by the same numbers as one filed anywhere else in the state. What changes locally is the courthouse, the clerk's procedure and how long the docket takes — not the amount.

What the statute says

N.C. Child Support Guidelines, Schedule of Basic Support Obligations (AOC-A-162, Rev. 1/23, eff. Jan. 1, 2023); G.S. 50-13.4(c) — North Carolina schedule of basic support obligations (income shares, combined adjusted gross income). North Carolina uses the parents' combined monthly ADJUSTED GROSS income (gross income less pre-existing support and responsibility for other children). The 2023 Schedule of Basic Support Obligations in the Child Support Guidelines (AOC-A-162, Rev. 1/23, effective January 1, 2023) covers $0 to $40,000 in $50 steps and the Guidelines say to interpolate between rows; the first band ($0-$1,300) is the $50 minimum order. The schedule's shaded low-income area builds in a self-support reserve tied to the federal poverty level: when the paying parent's own income is under $1,150 a $50 minimum order applies, and within the shaded area the obligation is computed on the paying parent's income alone, which this tool does not replicate. Above $40,000 a month ($480,000 a year) support is set by the court under G.S. 50-13.4(c) rather than the schedule, so no percentage is added. Work-related child care, health insurance premiums and extraordinary expenses are added and split by income share, and Worksheets B and C adjust for 123+ overnights or split custody.
