The law behind this calculator: New Jersey Appendix IX-F schedule of child support awards (income shares, combined weekly net income converted to monthly) — N.J. Court Rules, R. 5:6A and Appendix IX-F, Schedule of Child Support Awards (revised effective Sept. 1, 2025).

How New Jersey calculates it

  • Add both parents' monthly net incomes to get the combined income.
  • Find the basic child‑support obligation in the Appendix IX‑F schedule for that combined income and the number of children, using the nearest $50 row.
  • Calculate the paying parent’s share of the combined income (paying parent’s income ÷ combined income).
  • Multiply the schedule amount by that share to get the paying parent’s basic obligation.
  • If combined income exceeds $15,600, no percentage of the excess is added; if it is below $780, the court sets the award case‑by‑case. Adjustments for child care, health insurance, and parenting‑time are added later.

Worked example

In the example, the paying parent has a monthly net income of $4,000 and the other parent $2,500, giving a combined monthly net income of $6,500. The schedule row for $6,500 yields a basic obligation of $1,820. The paying parent’s share of the combined income is 61.5%, so the parent owes 61.5% × $1,820 = $1,120 per month before any child‑care, health‑insurance, or parenting‑time adjustments.

Frequently asked questions

How does New Jersey determine the paying parent’s share of child support?

The paying parent’s share equals the parent’s monthly net income divided by the combined monthly net income, and that percentage is applied to the basic schedule amount.

Are child‑support payments taxable in New Jersey?

No. Child‑support payments are not taxable to the receiving parent and are not deductible by the paying parent under New Jersey law.

What happens if our combined monthly net income is above $15,600?

The schedule’s top‑row figure is used as a minimum; the statute adds 0% of the income over $15,600 for any number of children, and the court may add a discretionary amount under N.J.S.A. 2A:34‑23.

My combined income is less than $780 per month. Can I get a lower support amount?

Below $780 the court does not use the schedule and instead sets the support case‑by‑case using low‑income rules.

Did the September 2025 revision change the income ranges or calculation method?

Yes. The revised schedule now uses combined weekly net income converted to monthly figures ranging from $780 to $15,600 in $50 steps, and the nearest $50 row is used for the basic obligation.

Is the calculation different in Newark, Jersey City or Paterson?

No. N.J. Court Rules, R. 5:6A and Appendix IX-F, Schedule of Child Support Awards (revised effective Sept. 1, 2025) sets one statewide guideline, so a case in Newark, Jersey City, Paterson uses the same percentages as anywhere else in New Jersey. Judges everywhere in the state may deviate only with written findings.
