How Virginia calculates it

  • Add the paying parent’s monthly gross income to the other parent’s monthly gross income to get the combined income.
  • Find the basic child‑support amount for that combined income and the number of children in Virginia’s schedule; rows are $50 apart and amounts between rows are interpolated as the statute directs.
  • Multiply the schedule amount by the paying parent’s share of the combined income (paying parent income ÷ combined income).
  • If the combined income exceeds $42,500, add the statutory percentage of the excess (2.6% for one child, 3.4% for two, up to 5.0% for six children) to the top‑row figure.
  • Add any work‑related child‑care costs and health‑insurance premiums, split by income share; apply the shared‑custody adjustment when the paying parent has more than 90 days of parenting time per year.

Worked example

In the worked example, the paying parent earns $4,000 per month and the other parent earns $2,500, giving a combined gross income of $6,500. The Virginia schedule lists a basic obligation of $1,556 for two children at that income level. The paying parent’s share of the combined income is 61.5%, so the monthly payment before any child‑care, health‑insurance, or parenting‑time adjustments is $958.
