Virginia Child Support Calculator (2026)

Virginia’s child‑support schedule, set out in Va. Code § 20‑108.2, starts at a presumptive minimum of $68 per month and the first income row covers $0‑$350 of combined monthly gross earnings. The law uses an Income‑Shares model, interpolates between $50 income steps up to $42,500, and adds a percentage of any income above that threshold. All calculations are based on gross (pre‑tax) income for both parents.

How Virginia calculates it

  • Add the paying parent’s monthly gross income to the other parent’s monthly gross income to get the combined income.
  • Find the basic child‑support amount for that combined income and the number of children in Virginia’s schedule; rows are $50 apart and amounts between rows are interpolated as the statute directs.
  • Multiply the schedule amount by the paying parent’s share of the combined income (paying parent income ÷ combined income).
  • If the combined income exceeds $42,500, add the statutory percentage of the excess (2.6% for one child, 3.4% for two, up to 5.0% for six children) to the top‑row figure.
  • Add any work‑related child‑care costs and health‑insurance premiums, split by income share; apply the shared‑custody adjustment when the paying parent has more than 90 days of parenting time per year.

Worked example

In the worked example, the paying parent earns $4,000 per month and the other parent earns $2,500, giving a combined gross income of $6,500. The Virginia schedule lists a basic obligation of $1,556 for two children at that income level. The paying parent’s share of the combined income is 61.5%, so the monthly payment before any child‑care, health‑insurance, or parenting‑time adjustments is $958.

Frequently asked questions

How is the paying parent’s share of child support calculated in Virginia?

Virginia uses the Income‑Shares model: the paying parent’s share equals their percentage of the combined gross income multiplied by the basic schedule amount for the family’s income level and number of children.

Does Virginia tax the child‑support payment?

Child‑support payments are not taxable income to the receiving parent and are not deductible by the paying parent under Virginia law.

What if my combined income is above $42,500?

For combined incomes over $42,500, Virginia adds a percentage of the excess to the top‑row schedule figure—2.6% for one child, 3.4% for two children, up to 5.0% for six children.

Can I get a lower amount if I have shared custody?

Yes. When the paying parent has more than 90 days of parenting time per year, the shared‑custody formula in the statute reduces the basic obligation before adding child‑care and health‑insurance adjustments.

What is the minimum child‑support order in Virginia?

The presumptive minimum order is $68 per month, regardless of income, unless the court finds a different amount appropriate.

Is the calculation different in Virginia Beach, Richmond or Arlington?

No. Va. Code § 20-108.2 sets one statewide guideline, so a case in Virginia Beach, Richmond, Arlington uses the same percentages as anywhere else in Virginia. Judges everywhere in the state may deviate only with written findings.
